why am I listening to No ti pierdas by Chambao?

Posted by Gordon on May 4, 2008

Because of last.fm. Because of the Wisdom of Crowds. Skip the next para if you know all about last.fm and scrobbling.

I bore my friends stupid with how much I like last.fm. I ask it to play me a radio station with ‘artists similar to Lhasa’ … and I get a continuous stream which includes those set out below. What it plays is derived from a complex analysis of what everyone else who is subscribed to last.fm listens to on iTunes, their MP3 etc. All that data from millions of users thrown in a pool to work out what is similar to what. It falls down when artists have the same name (eg Java – a French accordion punk outfit and Java – an older group playing Indonesia gamelan music!!).

And then what I listen to [on last.fm OR iTunes or I think any other source that goes through my computer] shortly thereafter appear in the list in the right hand column of this blog …

Chambao – No te Pierdas just listened
Mazzy Star – Take Everything 7 minutes ago
Juana Molina – Solo su voz 12 minutes ago
Joni Mitchell – Conversation 16 minutes ago
Buika – Nostalgias 20 minutes ago
Azam Ali – In This Divide 24 minutes ago
Amparanoia – Redemption Song (Bonus Track) 29 minutes ago
Nitin Sawhney – Oceans and Rain 33 minutes ago
Sheila Chandra – Speaking In Tongues II 37 minutes ago
Cristina Branco – Aquele Tão Triste Dia

Well actually updating of last.fm seems to be missing what I play through my slimserver [thing that sends itunes music wirelessly across the house to the stereo] which is a bore as that is most things ..
